What happens during a spot check
A spot check appointment is for an urgent, specific concern. This quick, focused check is suitable for a new, changing, bleeding, non-healing or otherwise unusual mole or skin lesion.
Your doctor will ask a few questions about the lesion before examining it closely with a dermatoscope. If further investigation is recommended, your doctor will explain the options available, which may include monitoring, mole mapping with 3D total body photography, biopsy or treatment planning, depending on your individual circumstances.
You will leave with a clear explanation of the findings and a plan for any follow-up or treatment required.
If a biopsy is recommended, this can usually be arranged within the next few days. In some cases, it may be possible to perform the biopsy during the same appointment; however, same-day availability cannot be guaranteed.
Please note: A spot check is limited to the particular lesion or area of concern. If you would like all of your skin examined, please book a full body skin check
Preparing for your urgent spot check
You will usually be asked to undress to your underwear so your skin can be examined thoroughly and systematically. Your privacy, dignity and comfort will be respected throughout your appointment. You are welcome to bring a friend or family member at any time during your appointment.
You will not routinely be asked to remove your underwear. If you have a spot beneath your underwear or in an intimate area, please let your doctor know so it can be examined with your consent.
To help your doctor assess your skin clearly, it may be helpful to:

Wear clothing that is easy to remove

Avoid wearing makeup or heavily tinted products

Remove nail polish before your appointment where possible

Bring a list of medications, previous skin cancers or biopsies

Point out any new, changing, bleeding, crusting or itchy spots

Let us know about any accessibility or comfort needs beforehand
